Pomeroy Statement On President Obama's Strategy For The War In Afghanistan

Congressman Earl Pomeroy released the following statement about the President's strategy for the war in Afghanistan that will be formally announced during a speech at the West Point Military Academy tonight.

"President Obama's Afghanistan plan provides military commanders the troop strength they said was required while placing clear time limits on maintaining this higher level of commitment.

"Over the last few years the Taliban insurgency has grown much more serious and threatens the return to power of the type of extremists who hosted Osama bin Laden's terrorist training camps 10 years ago.

"Based on the briefings I have had on Afghanistan -- including the meetings with our senior commanders and diplomats during a Congressional fact finding trip to the region in August -- I believe pulling out at this time would be disastrous to the stability of the region and to U.S. interests and security."
